Structural characterization

The characteristics of the unit cell can be used to predict the morphology and physical properties of a drug.


X-Ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD)

   

Provides phase identification of a crystalline material and information on unit cell dimensions.

XRD Single Crystal (SC-XRPD)

 

Provides detailed information about the internal lattice of crystalline substances, including unit cell dimensions, bond-lengths, bond-angles, and details of site-ordering.

Variable Temperature XRPD (VT-XRPD)

 

Permits the direct identification of crystalline phase as a function of temperature.

Infrared Spectroscopy (IR)

 

Detects functional groups and characterises covalent bonding information.

Raman Spectroscopy

 

Provides information on the physical form of the material.

Determination of crystallinity

 

Percent crystallinity is an important parameter as it can influence the processing behaviour of a drug as well as its pharmacological performance.

Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)

 

Measures the elemental content of a material from the ppt to the wt% range. The only elements which cannot be measured by ICP methods are C, H, O, N and the halogens.

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)

 

Provides information on the external morphology, chemical composition, and crystalline structure and orientation of materials.
